The Power of Resurrection

‘Because I live, you also will live’ – John 14:19

Who could live without facing death in life? Since Jesus was resurrected from death, those who believe in Him will not face death. This is clearly emphasized in the Bible.
What does the Scripture say about attaining eternal life? Jesus said before His crucifixion ‘I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever’ – John 6:51
This verse appropriates Jesus as the sustenance of one’s life. He also says in the same verse, ‘This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world’. The word flesh here points to Christ as the crucified one and the source of life. Here Jesus speaks about His flesh as the heavenly food which He gives to the people who believe in Him. This fact may seem hard to accept, but definitely not hard to understand.
Now we are going to study who can eat of this bread i.e. the flesh of Christ in detail.

Belief:
Jesus says, ‘He who believes in me will live, even though he dies’ - John 11:25
Only by exercising strong faith i.e. sheer belief in Jesus Christ, without a semblance of doubt (James 1:6), we could live a life which sees no death.
The Scripture says, ‘----but the righteous will live by his faith’ – Habakkuk 2:4
Hence we must believe that God exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him (Hebrews 11:6). One who believes in Jesus is the one who eats the flesh of Christ.

Obedience:
Jesus also said, ‘I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps My word, he will never see death’ – John 8:51
Jesus himself quoted a verse from Deuteronomy and said, ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’ – Matthew 4:4
One who obeys the word of God is the one who eats the flesh of Jesus Christ.

Sufferings:
Eating the flesh of Christ also means taking part in the sufferings of Jesus. ‘If we share in His sufferings, we may also share in His glory’ (Romans 8:17). The Scripture says, ‘If we endure, we will also reign with Him’ (2 Timothy 2:12). One should feel happy while participating in the sufferings of Christ because he will be blessed with honour when His glory is revealed (I Peter 4:13). Peter also says, ‘--- since Christ suffered in His body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in body is done with sin’ (I Peter 4:1).

Death as Christ died:
Paul has mentioned that he wanted to become like Jesus in his death too (Philippians 3:10), so also our attitude shall be accordingly. Then, how can we also have death as Jesus died? One Scripture verse explains that very precisely, ‘I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me’, Paul says in his epistle to Galatians 2:20.
Hence, now we are very clear with the point that only if we can eat the flesh of Christ, we will be able to live as Jesus is alive today and ever and ever.

Jesus was crucified, buried and raised on the third day, according to I Corinthians 15:44 ‘It is sown as natural body, it is raised as a spiritual body’. Then Jesus Christ became a life giving Spirit. That is why Paul also wanted to know the power of Jesus’s resurrection (Philippians 3:10)

Step 1:
If you want to live a Christ like life, first we have to put off our old self which is corrupt due to its deceitful desires (Eph 4:22). What does it mean? Our old self has to be crucified with Jesus so that our body of sin might be done away with (Romans 6:6).
Step 2:
The attitude of our minds has to be renewed completely (Eph 4:23). How is it possible? Prophet Ezekiel explains the process clearly. The LORD assures us by saying, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you” (Ezekiel 36:26).
Step 3:
Then we have to put on the new self, in true righteousness and holiness like God (Eph 4:24). “Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him” said Paul in Romans 6:8. As resurrection followed death in the experience of Christ, so also we, the believers, who die with Christ are raised to a new quality of life here and now in earth. The verse Romans 8:10 explains very precisely the above process which says, “But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit alive because of righteousness”.

We Christians are indwelt by the life giving Spirit as a result of justification, which in turn provides assurance that our resurrection is certain even now. Jesus said to her (Martha), “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25). “He (the Word) was with God in the beginning. In Him (the Word) was life” (John 1:1,4). Jesus became life giving Spirit after His resurrection, so that He can impart life to believers. That is why Jesus said, “I have come that they (believers) may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). God has given testimony about His Son that He (God) has given us eternal life and this life is in His Son. “He who has the Son has life and he who does not have the Son of God does not have life” (I John 5:11,12). After resurrection Jesus became a priest like Melchizedek on the basis of the power of an indestructible life (Hebrews 7:15,16). Similarly the power of the Holy Spirit who lives in us will also give life to our mortal bodies and raise us up. This is called our resurrection.

To sum up, let us see what Paul says about living in accordance with Jesus Christ,

  1. » We have to unite ourself with the Lord as one with Him in spirit (I Corinthians 6:17).
  2. » As Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, we all will be made alive in Christ (I Corinthians 15:22).
  3. » Because of the flame of resurrection life burning within, our mind and attitude are renewed day by day (II Corinthians 4:16)
  4. » We have the hope that by His power of resurrection, the Lord Jesus Christ will transform our mortal bodies so that they will become like glorious body, a transfigured one (Philippians 3:21).
  5. » We firmly believe that God will bring with Jesus Christ those who have fallen asleep in Him (I Thessalonians 4:14).

    Lessons of resurrection:

Let us not live the rest of our life in gratifying evil human desires, but in fulfilling the will of God (I Peter 4:2). Let us bear Christ’s attitude as strong weapon in our minds in order to endure cross and shall not grow weary and lose heart.

    A verse to remember:

“For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live” (Romans 8:13).

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you!
